An absolute pleasure to deal with

We honestly can’t express enough how sincerely grateful we are for all the help and guidance in finally getting our long-awaited house demolition and rebuild off the ground.

We’ve faced a number of hurdles over the years, but we truly feel that the project is now in the capable hands of Black Swan Architecture, who we believe will help us get it over the line.

Their communication has been excellent from the outset, and it’s clear how passionate they are about their work. Leading with incredible efficiency, Black Swan Architecture have been an absolute pleasure to deal with.

The comprehensive and clear documentation provided is unlike anything we received from the two previous architects we worked with along the way.

We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Black Swan Architecture to our friends and colleagues – and we will, whenever the opportunity arises.

Highly recommended!

Black Swan Architecture meticulously devised our rear extension plan, providing comprehensive explanations for every facet of the planning process. Their guidance has been instrumental, directing us on when and whom to contact at various stages of the project.

Kind, considerate, and quick!

A bright, airy design in keeping with the local area. Black Swan Architecture took on board our ideas and designed something truly spectacular from them. They are passionate about their work and that really came across when Marcus chatted to us. I loved the computer software that gave us a video walk through of the area, it really helped me to see what it would look like.

Beyond our expectations!

We had purchased a 1970s chalet bungalow that looked tired and dated, so I contacted Black Swan Architecture. We were so excited with Marcus’ creative designs. Black Swan managed the whole process from planning applications and construction, right through to right through to completion. We cannot recommend Marcus and Black Swan enough.

Meet Marcus

I’m Marcus Bree, founder of Black Swan Architecture, a studio rooted in Oxfordshire, serving clients across Oxfordshire and London. My work is about more than design; it’s about creating transformative environments tailored to your life, your style, and your aspirations.

With over 15 years of architectural expertise and a portfolio spanning luxury residences, wellness-focused spaces, and transformative design projects, I’ve had the privilege of shaping environments that are as refined as they are deeply personal. My background as a Royal Marine Commando has instilled in me a level of discipline, precision, and integrity that’s woven into every project I lead.

Each space I design is crafted with military precision and creative sensitivity, shaped not by trends but by you, your rhythms, your habits, your sense of home.

If you’re seeking a refined, one-to-one architectural experience grounded in discretion, depth, and distinction, I personally invite you to book an initial consultation.

A Tailored Introduction to Your Vision

This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s the beginning of your private design dialogue where we bring your vision to life.

During our conversation,  you and I will explore:

  • How you live now, and how you want to feel in your new space.
  • Design possibilities, from elegant structural flows to subtle sensory touches that enhance wellbeing.
  • Initial spatial concepts, often sketched by hand as we speak, a signature part of my process.
  • Your values, whether that’s sustainability, timelessness, legacy, or simply the quiet luxury of thoughtful design.

Every project begins with deep listening, and my role is to draw out what’s truly important , even if you haven’t yet put it into words.

Oxfordshire & London Our Design Footprint

Our studio is based in Oxfordshire, with work extending across the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire villages, and prime London locations. Whether it’s a contemporary townhouse renovation in Kensington or a countryside retreat outside Henley, we bring the same dedication to craft, wellness, and beauty.

A Studio That Works Differently

Unlike other architectural firms where clients are passed between teams, when you work with us, you work directly with me. I personally oversee each detail, ensuring the highest level of quality, discretion, and care, the same standards I applied during my former career as a Royal Marine Commando.

We design homes, estates, and spaces that don’t just impress , they endure. They elevate how you live, every day. They tell your story without saying a word.

Modern House Extension

South Oxfordshire House

South Oxfordshire House transforms a modest family home through sensitive extensions designed for a multi-generational household. The project delivers an accessible ground-floor suite, a secluded master bedroom above, and a light-filled kitchen and dining space to the rear, all thoughtfully connected to the garden. The design’s clarity and resilience ultimately secured approval following an initial planning refusal, reflecting an enduring commitment to inclusive, dignified living.

Watchfield House

Watchfield House is a sensitive renovation and extension of a stone end-terrace cottage in Swindon. This 1800s property has been carefully transformed to support the needs of a growing family, blending historic character with modern living. The project includes a rear extension, first-floor reconfiguration, and a loft conversion, all designed to enhance light and space and promote overall well-being.

Northamptonshire House

In the village of Moreton Pinkney, rural Northamptonshire, this whole-house renovation was designed to promote calm, clarity, and connection. Light-filled spaces, open-plan living, and framed views of the surrounding landscape were key to supporting the client’s mental well-being. A considered, restorative transformation rooted in simplicity, space, and natural beauty.

Old Cattle Barn

In the heart of Northamptonshire, the Old Cattle Barn showcases how rural heritage can be transformed into contemporary living. Black Swan Architecture converted this rustic steel-framed structure into an energy-efficient home, preserving its agricultural essence and deep connection to the landscape.

Lingfield Terrace

Lingfield Terrace celebrates the seamless fusion of heritage and modern design. Our clients connected deeply to their Victorian terrace home, which had been their family sanctuary for years. Seeking to optimise space and functionality for family living, they envisioned a contemporary transformation while honouring the historic character of the original property.

Milton House

Milton House is a standout example of sustainable, modern design, meticulously crafted to meet Passivhaus standards. Situated outside the village settlement in Northamptonshire, this standalone home integrates energy efficiency, ecological harmony, and contemporary elegance.
