Heritage Renewed for Modern Family Living
Set within the conservation area of Watchfield, this 1800s stone end-terrace cottage presented both a challenge and an opportunity. The clients, looking to grow into their space, sought to sensitively extend and modernise the home without losing its historic charm.
Black Swan Architecture was engaged to deliver a meticulously considered renovation that preserves the building’s character while elevating it into a functional, light-filled sanctuary for contemporary family life.
The project scope included a rear extension, a reconfigured first floor, and a loft conversion. Each element was designed to improve spatial flow, daylight access, and, ultimately, the home experience. The rear extension provided a spacious kitchen and dining area, making it the heart of the home and enhancing day-to-day living. Above, a newly arranged first floor introduced an additional bedroom with an en-suite. At the same time, the loft was thoughtfully converted into a master suite, complete with dormer windows and exposed beams to honour the cottage’s original fabric.
Design decisions throughout reflect a balance between old and new, working together in harmony. The original stonework has been preserved and celebrated, while contemporary interventions such as skylights, large-format glazing, and high-performance insulation quietly elevate the home’s performance and liveability.
Working within a modest budget and under heritage constraints, the project demanded both creativity and discipline. Structural reinforcements were executed with precision to maintain the building’s integrity, while interior finishes were chosen to blend modern comfort with rustic textures. This included neutral palettes, timber detailing, and exposed stone, delivering a warm, grounded atmosphere.
Currently under construction, Watchfield House represents Black Swan Architecture’s continued commitment to thoughtful, health-centred design. It is a project rooted in heritage yet confidently stepping into the future. It reaffirms that with careful planning, passion, and purpose, even the most traditional homes can evolve to meet the needs of modern life.
