Old Cattle Barn

From Rural Heritage to Modern Living

In the heart of Northamptonshire, the Old Cattle Barn showcases how rural heritage can be transformed into contemporary living. Black Swan Architecture converted this rustic steel-framed structure into an energy-efficient home, preserving its agricultural essence and deep connection to the landscape.

The design highlights the barn’s character with vertical timber cladding that complements its surroundings and weathers beautifully over time. Large glazing elements, including sliding glass doors, flood the interior with natural light, connect seamlessly to outdoor spaces, and retain the barn’s distinctive silhouette.

Inside, the open-plan layout takes advantage of the barn’s generous volume, featuring an expansive living area, a kitchen with dining space, and a mezzanine-level home office. High-performance insulation, double glazing, and underfloor heating bring the home up to modern energy standards without compromising comfort.

Careful planning and structural reinforcements ensured large openings for windows and doors met modern regulations while preserving the barn’s rustic charm. The result is a harmonious blend of industrial character and contemporary warmth, creating a spacious, energy-efficient home honouring its heritage and delivering exceptional functionality.
